Jan Rosenberg, a very good friend, rented Hammond a studio space at his house in Karlovy Vary. They had met when they both lived in the Black Forest of Germany. One day, Jon said to Hammond, "You should compose a suite for Karlovy Vary." Hammond said, "it cost money to sit and compose a suite," somewhat as a kind of joke. Jan replied, "You composed the Black Forest Suite!" Hammond said, "OK," but then realized he had committed himself, because he always does what he says. It took two years to complete, and he composed most of it in Karlovy Vary.
