Rushing was composed in New York City (1973) for a young pianist from Cleveland, Paul Epstein, who was studying at Julliard Conservatory. He and flutist Karen Joseph performed Hammond's stage presentation; Urges for Serenity for flute,piano,percussion and a dancer, Rosa Lee Tracy, at Elmhurst College, Elmhurst Mass.
