Haley and the Devil, Rappin'

This dialogue/poem was inspired and requested by Mr. Alfred A. Duckett, who was the press agent for Mahalia Jackson and Duke Ellington. He is uncle to Karen Joseph and we met when he attended one of my stage presentations with music, poetry, songs and dance called "Urges for Serenity".
Mr. Duckett was an exceptional poet in his own right. When he heard what I was writing, he engaged me to write something set to music for Miss Jackson, not a play. When I asked him why he wouldn't do it himself, he said: "I worked with her and I don't think I could be impartial, and I like the way you write."
I was told by Mr. Duckett that Mahalia Jackson would rent a theatre on the South Side of Chicago, hire a staff and cook just to feed people. She bought clothes for them. She made her money and then would do her social work. People would come and not even know Mahalia Jackson was doing this because she'd be in the kitchen. Some people who saw her didn't even know who she was.
